Health Headlines - Wednesday

Insulin and Breast Cancer:
Your risk of getting one type of cancer could increase, depending on the amount of insulin in your body.
Researchers say high insulin levels have already been associated with obesity.
Now, doctors at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City say high insulin levels may also play a role in developing breast cancer.
The researchers found women in their study with more insulin had a 1.5% greater risk of developing the disease.
The risk was even higher among women who were not taking hormone therapy.

Second-Hand Smoke:
The government is calling second-hand smoke a very serious public health threat.
The CDC cites a smoking ban in Pueblo, CO that lead to a huge drop in heart attack hospitalizations.
Three years after a workplace smoking ban began, the number of heart hospitalizations dropped 41%.
Researchers believe it is a clear sign the ban had a greater impact than expected.
At least 8 other previous studies have shown smoking bans can lead to lower numbers of heart attacks.

Champagne Safety:
If your not careful with the bubbly, the new year could begin with a trip to the ER.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, about 1500 Americans end up in the hospital with holiday eye injuries from flying champagne corks.
When a champagne bottle is opened improperly, the cork can travel up to 50 miles-per-hour.
When opening that bottle of bubbly, make sure it's chilled. And hold it at a 45 degree angle, pointed away from you and your guests.
