Nashville Hosts Housing Fair - John Dunn
FOX 17 News – By: John Dunn
Local realtors want you to know the time is right to turn the American dream into reality.
We’re talking about home ownership, and here in Nashville it’s a buyer’s market.
That’s the message from the city’s first ever housing fair.
If you’re in the market for a new home, this is the place to be.
"We're looking for something that is a little unusual, because we're looking for something with a basement in the ground," says Raymond Smith.
The Nashville Housing Fair brought many first-time homebuyers like Raymond Smith and his wife to the state fairgrounds.
"We're looking to talk to people about financing," says Smith.
Lately, the news about the housing market hasn’t been good.
Foreclosures are on the rise, and many people are having trouble selling their homes.
Nashville realtors say it isn’t all bad.
"The housing market here locally is competitive, to say the least," says Vivian Brandon with the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors.
In fact it’s very much a buyer’s market.
The median price of a single family home in Nashville has gone down about 5% since last July. Meanwhile, the number of homes available has gone up.
"Our opinion is that it is a good time for buyers to make a decision, they have so many homes to choose from," says Brandon.
This housing fair is helping buyers to recognize the market trends.
"As far as the market is concerned, it does seem to be expanding and growing, and we want to take advantage of that," says Janice Johnson-Smith.
James Brasfield and his family say they’re just about ready to purchase their first home.
"Hopefully within the next month or so," says Brasfield.
They’re taking advantage of all the information from homebuilders, realtors, and financing experts.
"About all the assistance programs they have on, the different housing programs, and the locations," says Brasfield.
It’s hoped at the end of the day more home buyers will be in the market.
Saturday’s housing fair also stressed the new $7,500 tax credit that’s available to first-time homebuyers.
The tax credit is available until July 2009.
