Lawyer for Embattled State Trooper Speaks Out-Cindy Carter
The attorney for embattled state trooper Ronnie Shirley is speaking out.
He tells FOX 17 his client is anxious to set the record straight.
Shirley is accused of pulling personal records on almost 200 people without authorization.
His attorney, Worrick Robinson, says Shirley wants to tell his side of the story.
Robinson says, "Lieutenant Shirley is a human and he has a family and he's had to sit there and watch all of this come out, all these untruths and mis-statements come out."
For now Robinson says he's speaking for his client, but he says Lieutenant Shirley believes so far the department's investigation into his alleged misdeeds is fair.
Robinson Says, "It was not his intent to harm anybody or be malicious to anyone."
Shirley is accused of using state computers to access the personal information, such as driving history, on 182 people.
Authorities believe he did this on his own and as favors to colleagues.
Col. Mike Walker with the TN Highway Patrol says, "We still have pride. We are professionals. We have integrity."
Though the THP won't release the names of the list of peope Shirley looked up, Col. Mike Walker insists no political
candidates or elected officials are on it.
Right now Lieutenant Shirley is on paid administrative leave. The THP says they can't make a call about whether or not he will lose his job until the investigation is complete and they have a chance to review all information.
Robinson says his client understands the full weight of the situation.
Robinson says, "He's spending time with his family. He's had some really good friends come by and see him other friends are very supportive."
Many state lawmakers, who are clamoring to see the names on Shirley's list, say even if the Lieutenant is cleared of any criminal intent, the question of his ethics remains.
Authorities say they'll release the names on Shirley's list once the District Attorney gives the green light.
