Cannon County Water Restrictions - Flint Adam
Parts of Middle Tennessee finally see some much needed rainfall.
It ends a streak of 19 days in august without rain for some areas, meanwhile -- it remains dry in many places.
Cannon County water officials say they're playing it on the safe side and issuing a voluntary water restriction -- effective this week.
Despite an August without rain, Fay Pitts has kept her porch plants alive - carefully.
"I use two, two liter containers and water the plants on the porch; and the others that are in the yard -- if the Lord doesn't take care of them with the rain, hey - they can shoot the breeze."
That's the mindset Cannon County residents must have now that water officials have issued voluntary water restrictions.
Andy Jacobs with the Woodbury Water department says, "In June, we had 4 and a half inches of rain. In July we had a little over an inch, and we haven't had any in August."
Jacobs says the effects are showing.
The Woodbury Water Department gets it supply from the east fork of the Stone's River.
River levels are down.
Normally, about three inches of water flows over the dam - that's not the case now.
The river is a little below normal, but not bad enough to lead to mandatory water restrictions.
"We're not in any emergency, but we're just wanting people to start conserving water now in case the weather doesn't change any time soon," says Jacobs.
It means a lot of dried out yards may get worse.
Folks have been trying to keep their grass alive at the expense of thousands of gallons of county water.
"When everybody turns their hydrant on it's all going to drop - the pressure's all going to drop."
Until more rain comes or the dry season ends, Jacobs is asking residents to conserve.
"Don't wash your car - don't water your lawn - it's a little late in the season, but don't fill up your swimming pool or keep adding water to it," says Jacobs.
Fay Pitts says she's been conservative with her water all summer long, and she's not surprised a voluntary water restriction is now in place.
"I'm just surprised they waited this late."
She's hoping folks won't have to worry about it for long.Cannon County Water Restrictions - Flint Adam
